On the iPod Touch 2G front
People are asking about whether it is safe to update. Personally, I will be updating to experiment with 2.2 as well as attempt to dump the filesystem, but I am not sure about you guys. As long as Apple didn’t do anything weird to somehow prevent it, a DFU restore should usually work. Apple is being tricky and made the iPod Touch 2G build 5G77a while the other iPod and iPhones build is just 5G77, probably so that we cannot get the vfdecrypt key for the root fs dmg.
2.2 for the other platforms
Apple has added a teeny roadblock, but when the new Pwnage Tool comes out, you would not notice it. Even the people on DevTeam, if they make Pwnage bundles differently than me, will not notice it. Anyway, the roadblock just took a little bit longer of my time, and I got past it easily enough.
To confirm, the below screenshots are from my jailbroken iPhone 3G with a beta Cydia to get it working

I love it! my 1st firmware upgrade. i hope u find the exploit soon chronic!! wee!
Great work, as always, chronic! Keep it up! Experiment away!

I just updated! No Street View for iPod Touch?!?!
Well lets keep waiting for the hardware exploit and finally jailbreak
I can always downgrade back to 2.1.1 as long as I have the ipsw, right? The shift-click on the restore button trick?
Since there is no baseband it is secure to upgrade and complete downgrade works aswell.

Flash memory uses NAND chip, not NOR.
What does the pictures saying? Is it for the ipod touch 2g?

Thanks for the update. Was wondering if you had the vfdecrypt key for the normal 5G77 builds? Might be a bit early in asking but, I figured it couldn't hurt.
Hey, is the filesystem dump private? Because I can't find it on google or anywhere.
Also, I'll be happy with just RW access to the filesystem to install cracked apps.
What's your top priority right now?
update right now???
question for chronic-dev :
creating a custom ipsw with pwnagetool strips the ipsw of the baseband upgrade. suppose I'm ultra-paranoid, and given the ipsw is just a zip file, how can I make sure that my custom ipsw doesn't contain the baseband upgrade before flashing it? (which files to look for inside ,etc?)
I'm always afraid that I didn't check something and that the custom ipsw will upgrade my 01.45 baseband.
thanks in advance!
I've already updated my Ipod Touch 2G. Are there any ways to downgrad ?
You can use a DFU restore to downgrade, but why bother?
It was only a question
thx for the answer
NOR = where the low level bootloader, bootloader, devicetree, boot images, SysCfg, and NVRAM are
NAND = where the filesystem of the device is, like a hard drive
if you have a 3G, hold off until new PwnageTool release. If it is an iPod Touch, well, you do not have a baseband to worry about for unlock.
yes, it would be illegal to distribute.
isn't our ipod use nand instead of nor,
chronicdev… as of 1/4/09 when do you expect a new version of quickpwn to be released that is compatible with the itouch 2g software?
