To tether or not to tether, that is the question

As you probably know by now, AriX has successfully been able to put together a working ramdisk with a few various hacks that different team members have helped with, (0wnboot for bootstrapping it, -v boot arg, etc.), but the question is now whether it should be released. In it’s current form, it is a bit hacked together, and contains copyrighted Apple code. It was made manually, and not automatically put together with a program, like what QuickPwn does to jailbreak you. So it is not suitable for release, which leads to the next question: Should we really put time towards it?

We can run unsigned code, we can boot a custom ramdisk to deploy Cydia and such, but it all boils down to a tethered jailbreak, as everyone knows a bootrom exploit is pretty much needed to get any further. People keep asking us to release the tethered one, but they don’t realize that the work that would need to be put into creating a user friendly tethered one would drastically take away from our time reversing the bootrom to have a permanant jailbreak. I’m not saying it will never happen, but I do think you should look at the facts…

Tethered Jailbreak:
- I have had my iPod jailbroken this way, and the connecting to a computer every boot thing is REALLY annoying, it might not seem so, but it is.
- Battery dies? Connect to a computer to boot up.
- Applications crashes / hangs really bad? Connect to a computer to boot up.
- No custom boot logos
- Firmware updates are annoying to handle, but then again that would depend on how nicely the exploit was implemented and how stuff in NOR is dealt with (keep at 2.1.1 stuff, replace with 2.1.1 kernel on fs? put patched 2.2 stuff and have it default to dfu every boot? there are a few possibilities)
- It will waste a lot of our time to work on versus finding a permanant jailbreak
- 2.2 OTB people will encounter some issues that would require a workaround, due to a new NAND that 2.1.1 iBoot does not support, which would also take more time away from searching for a bootrom exploit
- People won’t read the fine print (the fact that it is tethered) and complain that we bricked their iPods, taking away time from us
- We will have to support any problems people are having, taking time away from searching for a bootrom exploit, and just not helping them would make us come off in a bad light, so that is not much of an option
- Datel and our buddies in the ea$t would surely leech off of our success by making cheap and unreliable dongles that an be manufactured for not much at all in China, and they could be sold for $50 or more becuase they know that people will buy into it
- And the list goes on

Permanent Jailbreak
- Firmware update resistant, bug can never be closed
- Custom patched LLB, iBoot, etc. always in NOR and always validated by the new cot
- Custom boot logos
- Reboot as many times as you want without connecting to a computer. Low battery? No problem. Application crashed bad? No problem.
- Linux
- We won’t be preoccupied with getting a permanent jailbreak as we would be if we released a tethered one, so that would give us the time to make some cool hacks for jailbroken people :)
- Did I mention you don’t have to be hooked up to a computer?

Hopefully people asking for a tethered jb will take a look at that and realize why it is definitely not a good idea. In other news, I uploaded 0wnboot to the Downloads section of the chronicdev google code for any developers out there who want to tinker around. I must apologize, but we have still not properly got all of the bugs worked out with the new iRecovery that has /dumpMem , so hold tight!

im serious. the forum says to make a backup of ur ipod before jailbreak, so u can get ur music. i just now remembered that all i had to do is sync. but if the jailbreak is erased, shouldnt i be able to still connect my ipod and restore it again?

  2. Stray_Mongrel says:

They will never “get it”. No amount of common sense will get though to these types that refuse to accept what they read.

Or more importantly, what is not there to read. (Meaning no new blog post = no new information)

    It's not rocket science.

  3. Stray_Mongrel says:

I haven't actually tried it, so I can't say for sure, but I think that restoring your iPod, just erases the custom_restore.ipsw, which effectively removes your jailbreak. Plus, doing a backup of your iPod does not copy any music off the iPod, unless maybe if it's an iTunes purchase.

You can, however, re-sync your jailbroken iPod to your iTunes, and get all your playlists sync'd back onto your iPod.

Also, remember, in order to re-boot your iPod, you have to follow the last steps on the jailbreak all over again, every time you re-boot. All the steps after restoring the custom ipsw have to be done each re-boot.

  4. aminpro says:

    cool lol

  5. RSP says:

when i plug my ipod in it is not even being read by my computer. i message pops up saying usb device not reconized. so when i i do the last step, it says ipod not found, im freaking out.

  6. aminpro says:

so where can i find a website for the ipod touch 2g jailbreak dev like progress on the bluetooth chip(the nike chip) maybe it's the same thing as bluetooth just the program makes it connect to the nike? and where can i find this diagnostic menu that have many things to turn and turn off when we jailbreak our ipod…

thx in advance( not forcing u to relpy as a few ppl will think of this when somone say THANKS IN ADVANCE )

  7. aminpro says:

ooh.. you are in the … “like bricked” part, Mr.stray maybe can explain this to you…….

    Mr. stray….

  8. maperrera says:

are you sure you arent in dfu mode? have you tried putting it in itunes and factory reseting it

  9. RSP says:

that would be great. it really seems like its bricked, but ive heard u cant brick a 2g

  10. aminpro says:

yeah u can't brick a 2g…. but haven't do the jailbreak myself as i'm going to bring my ipod to an apple reseller store cuz the sleep/power button has a defect as it sunked and not poping up back but the button still works but it's preety tight to switch off or sleep it.

  11. Stray_Mongrel says:

It's 100% fixable, so no need to panic. I would make sure iTunes is up, and running before plugging the iPod into the computer. Try to set it in DFU mode, remeber to use the Windows USB chime as your clues.

You did install the Lib USB under WinXP compatibility mode?

  12. 2GJailbroken.:D says:

Stop complaining and just tether right now.I hardly turn my iPod off anyways and for some reason I find the jailbreaking and rebooting process fun and easy.I've jailbroken mine and 3 of my friend's iPod Touches too!Its amazing and really easy to do.If you use Cyw00d that is.:D

  13. RSP says:

yes, and when i try to set it in dfu mode, instead of the chime, the thing pops up saying “unknown device, the USB has malfunctioned”

  14. RSP says:

oh and under compatibility, winXp isnt a choice, its 95, 98, service pack, or 2000

  15. SVTCobra says:

No, I did the jailbreak and then restored from backup. It put your settings back but the jb is all good

  16. Stray_Mongrel says:

You're on windows XP already then. Sounds to me like the Lib USB didn't install properly. Uninstall Lib USB, then run windows update, and then try to reinstall it.

  17. RSP says:

got it back up and running! Thank you for all your help =]

got a question: when im in the command promt and i copy and past the ispw outa the read me instructions it keeps saying error after i hit enter or could not specify. Why is this happening i have vista what am i doing please help

  20. Stray_Mongrel says:

I think you are trying to paste a file into a text command line. It's hard to explain, but you can only paste words, not programs into the command line.

I'd say you might be in over your head.

  21. Andy says:

Cudos to that :P (what does cudos mean lol?) I dont turn my off. besides ive made a bootloader over at IPodtouchfans that boots up the ipod in 2-4 seconds with no replugging

Guys if your like me a novice at all of this and jsut want to jailbreak for the cool themes and apps. DO NOT DO IT! Hardly anything works because you have to keep rebooting etc. Let's just wait untill the guys at chronic and dev team get this un-tethered Jailbreak out.
However, it does need to be said that Chronic team are doing brilliantly and you have my support. Thank you for doing this at your own will! I cannot wait for un-tethered JB.
    Thanks again :)

  33. Patrick says:

Please, don't waste your time working on a tethered jailbreak, unless you find that an untethered jailbreak is not possible. I'd rather wait so that the exploit will be permanent, and a new exploit will not have to be found with every software update. Besides, having to connect to a computer on every boot would be really annoying, and I, personally, don't always have a computer available wherever i go to do the tethered jailbreak.

  34. Xeon says:

When is delivred the permanent jailbreak ?

  35. jvoytko says:

Thanks for the progress guys! I can't wait for the Full Permanant JB! WTG!

  36. jvoytko says:

Go for the permanant JB! I Would rather not having to need a PC in my pocket all the time.. But do what you can!

  37. bones1234 says:

o my gosh stop complaining the tethered jailbreak is fine i have had mine jailbroken for two weeks and only restarted 3 times plus it is extremely simple to restart i would be fine if they never discovered the untethered verison so stop your wineing

  38. V1K3SH says:

go for permanent dude.!!! full respect 2 all u guys wrkin har dout there.

  39. Sheeshka Bob says:

I just have a question (And NO its NOT about when the perm jb will be done lol).

Someone mentioned a kind of brute-force to get the sigs in apps so they can
run without the need for a jb. I know it would take years to find the sigs, but my question is: Does each app have a unique sig, or do all apps need the same sig to run? If its the latter, my thought would be to try bruteforcing it WHILE you're working on the other methods, so that it would be a “whichever happens first” scenario. Then again I'm no expert – just thought to add my 2 cents worth (even if I'm throwing that 2 cents into a billion dollar pool lol).

  40. Sheeshka Bob says:

Anyway forgot to add: Good luck with the perm jb.
Down a few beers for me when you do get it going.

  41. twisterdotcom says:

I did go to the trouble of jailbreaking my ipod, and i suppose when i say trouble, it wasnt EVER so hard, just now it's such an annoyance to reboot, even with a premade boot.bat file. Plus, its buggy.as.hell. I have since gone back to official apple firmware.

And i say, it is so much better. I dont have anything against jailbreaking, ive been doing it ever since 1g 1.1.1, but it got to the point where this was too crap.

I shant be going back untill maybe the second perm jailbreak comes out, just something more reliable than THAT.

  42. Mordlust says:

I just Want to tell that the tethered jailbreak is enough for me! I dont even need a untetbered jb!
Its so easy today jailbreaking the ipd2g! There are GUI Windows Tools allready for doing this!

    Thanks again to musclenerd!!!

  43. Mordlust says:

And thank you too chronic! ;)

the only jailbreak with problems at the moment is the semi tethered other than that there are none ive had mine jail broken since day 2 and no really big problems except for when i was trying to set it up. but now they have an automated program for it so there is no point not to do it. especially since it very rarely crashes. even if it does though there is a one click boot option as well so tell me what is so buggy about the tethered jailbreak?

ps: this isnt the permanent jailbreak.

  47. lovinmyjailbroken2g says:

no one knows if they even will find an exploit even if they do it may takes all year. with that said you obviously havent jailbroken your ipod becuase mine and countless others have jailbroken theres with no problems except for trying to set it up on your own even then there's a program that can do it for you so go take your bullshit some place else
